Ocean – Desert – Ocean

Nov 14 / 2018 Day 67 Camula / La Cueva del Pirata

How nice to wake up to the sound of the ocean and having a cup of coffee, sitting beside a palm tree in the sun. Two more campers, that’s it. The young Chilean couple came outside at about the same time for coffee, so we did start talking and exchanged our knowledge. Somehow it got 1 PM when we had breakfast. Too late to keep going, so we decided to stay another night. Actually there is one Baja 1000 racer after the next coming by, as this is part of the track. They are doing test runs. In the evening we had dinner together with the couple from Chile. Rosario made a nice pasta mix and Sylke made some tortillas with chorizo. I, Frank did provide the beer and Pepe was eating and drinking, haha. Then we spend part of the night talking and we hope to see them again some day or better soon , somewhere.

Nov 15 / 2018 Day 68 Camula / La Cueva del Pirata – Cactus Wonderland

Time to say goodbye to Rosario and Pepe and move on. Soon the “dust eaters” Majbritt and Mike are coming to enjoy the noise of the Baja1000 race in Camula.
This is day 5 driving down the Baja California in Mexico. It has nothing to do with California. So far no long beach with sand. As a driver you better keep your eyes on the road. If you don’t, it can be your last moment. We did see more crosses than we drove km. Be careful and keep the rubber on the road.
Today’s stretch was “kind of nothing” to the right and the left. The landscape is interesting, but it is pretty dry. Cacti everywhere. Once you come to Catcus Wonderland, this is a must stop. As the name says, cacti and more cacti. In addition there are huge boulders that make this area one of a kind. Find a pull out and park, there are multiple spots for that. It was lots of fun hiking around and take amazing pictures. The sunset is spectacular, but don’t walk around after dark, you never know what you step on.

Nov 16 / 2018 Day 69 Cactus Wonderland – Campo Pesquero

This part of the world is so different. Being from the Yukon, we are used to a lot of wildlife. In the USA was already only Bison and Deer. Down here in the Baja, I did see rabbits so far. It is more or less cows, horses and goats on the road. Driving thru Cactus Wonderland was extremely nice scenery. I had to get off the road to drive on a parallel dirt road, as driving on pavement only is getting really boring. So far no need for a 4×4.
It is interesting that, to drive all the way south on the Baja, you have to cross from the west to the east and vice versa a few times. Todays stretch was going to the west, so for the night we were trying to find a spot on the Pacific coast, and we found it. We had no internet, to check for possible overnight spots on IOverlander, so the map had to do it. We found this little spot on the map called Campo Pesquadero. Sounded interesting, so we had to try it out. From the main road it was about 12 km on a bumpy dirt road. Once we arrived at the ocean, we did see the fish camp already from a short distance ahead. Just before we drove into it, a guy in a Jeep stopped beside us and rolled down his window. He asked if we are looking for a place to camp for the night and of course, we said yes. “ You came to a great spot. Just drive around the building to the right and follow the dirt road and you will find beautiful spots right on the beach”. We thanked him and after a short detour to the end of a sandbank, we followed his directions. As he said, we found an easy in and out spot on the sand where we parked for the night.
When we had internet again, we actually found this place mentioned on IOverlander, but obviously just following your instincts works fine too.
